Messenger Kids

Working on the Growth team on Messenger Kids to make and support the app that is fun and safe for kids and easy for parents to manage

Messenger Kids is a free video messaging and chat app for kids offering more parental controls and fun for kids.

I worked at the Growth Team of Messenger Kids; I supported the product design and the development of fun and safe-to-use products.

  • Contracted by Underbelly, a design agency in Utah. Defined the strategy for new and existing digital products and contributed to the development of design systems for Messenger Kids and Facebook.
  • Designed user-centered and engaging experiences by coordinating with cross-functional partners, including product managers, content strategists, and engineers.
  • Delivered the product with short- and long-term plans with the north star vision based on communication and research within stringent deadlines.
  • Served as a part of Messenger Kids' growth team. Supported the product design and the development of fun and safe-to-use products.
  • Collaborated with engineering partners to ensure pixel-perfect designs across iOS and Android devices.
  • Ensured the smooth execution and completion of projects while creating presentations to measure project management performance and review.

1. Messenger Kids | 'Kids You May Know' feature
Kids You May Know feature is a suggestion unit that shows friends of friends that the user might know. Based on the mutual friends, kids would be able to expand their connection easier.

2. Emoji Status
Emoji Status feature is designed to be an ice breaker for kids who don't know how to start a conversation with friends. This version enables kids to customize their emojis to show their status.

3. Help Kids Connect
Help Kids Connect feature is the new setting to give kids options to share their info with possible connections so the user can be discovered by friends more easily.

4. Status
The new version of Messenger Kids plans to have emoji and text status that allows kids to reply to friends' status. I designed the status and reply features.

5. Documentation
Documentation sample for the stakeholders, XFN partners, and the designer who will take over the project later.

6. Presentation
Presentation sample to brief the project to the wider organization and get approval for further development.

Project Case Study

Kids have a hard time breaking the ice with a friend on messenger kids. The team tested emoji status that displays emoji as a status on the chat window. The reactivation and retention had significant growth. However, there are design problems that were not addressed, so I am assigned to improve the Emoji Status' flow and design.
